BuzzFeed is no stranger to criticism, and a lot of people steer clear of their content altogether, and a lot of people sincerely enjoy their stuff. It is after all one of the most popular media sites in the world.

The site has plenty of articles about cannabis, such as “12 Everyday Activities Unexpectedly Made Better with Marijuana” and “33 Scientific Reasons to Smoke More Weed.”

But when I came across a series of their marijuana-themed videos, “10 Problems Only Pot Smokers Understand,” I found something quite disturbing.

Does BuzzFeed realize the damage they’re causing with their stoner videos?

Does BuzzFeed realize the damage they’re causing with their stoner videos?

These videos make cannabis users look like irresponsible, lazy, unfocused burnouts. Sure, they may be good for some cheap laughs, but reinforcing these stereotypes does a lot of harm.

Content like this further confirms the misinformed views of prohibitionists and it does nothing to help the countless people who do misuse pot like we see in the video.

This is not what cannabis use looks like when it is responsibly embraced as a wellness product. In fact, these videos serve as a warning of how NOT to use cannabis.

Does Cannabis Really
Impair Judgment?

Positive food choices hinge on our attitude towards nutrition; not our cannabis use.

Positive food choices hinge on our attitude towards nutrition, not our cannabis use.

If you know you can’t make sensible decisions while under the influence of cannabis, you’ll want to avoid trips to the supermarket or anywhere else for that matter when you’re in a psychoactive state.

Yet plenty of other pot enthusiasts go about their day-to-day activities with no problems at all.

Responsible use tip: Respecting this plant means learning exactly how it affects you and avoiding marijuana at times when it may become a burden or hinder productivity.

Cannabis Actually Helps a lot of People Socialize

Some of the most meaningful conversations I’ve ever had have been while under the influence of cannabis.

Some of the most meaningful conversations I’ve ever had have been while under the influence of cannabis.

Why is this guy in the video afraid to answer his phone? Is he paranoid? Does he feel that he’s done a bad thing after taking a bong rip?

More important, what does this antisocial message convey to people who have never used cannabis before?

Some people do feel paranoid whenever they ingest THC, but there are also plenty of people who depend on cannabis to relieve them from social anxiety.

Responsible use tip: Awareness of set and setting also plays an important role. If you don’t want any phone calls to interfere with your cannabis experience, switch your phone to mute or – better yet – turn off the device completely when you know you need some chill time.

Will Cannabis Turn You into a Mindless Idiot?

Is this the image you want people to associate with cannabis?

Is this the image you want people to associate with cannabis?

Here’s another low blow to cannabis use, making it look like the plant turns us into complete idiots.

Sorry but if an adult has toys whom he or she suspects to be alive just like in Toy Story, then they probably are idiots. Pot doesn’t really have anything to do with it, unless the person started using it at too young of an age thus inhibiting cognitive development.

Responsible use tip: THC (as opposed to CBD) has been proven to negatively affect growth of the human brain. There is still a lot of debate about the age at which the brain becomes fully developed, but ingestion of THC during one’s teenage years is not the best idea.

Posting Dumb Things on Social Media

Social media is rampant with dumb posts, but do all these posts come from cannabis users?

Social media is rampant with dumb posts, but do all these posts come from cannabis users?

Just as there are plenty of people who use cannabis in a careless way, even more people approach social media haphazardly. This is why major platforms like Facebook and Twitter have made it easy to unfollow people.

However, there is another important cannabis caveat here. The THC experience can often lead to a flow state of enthusiastic ideation. But like any brainstorm session, a lot of these ideas may not be winners.

Whether you use cannabis or not, whatever you blast out on social media or through emails might be best served with a little reflection as opposed to instantaneous reaction.

Responsible use tip: When under the influence of marijuana, make the effort to privately record all of your ideas and then review them for validity once the psychoactive state wears off.

Wasting Time on Wikipedia

Associating idle web surfing with cannabis use is just another unfair overgeneralization that reinforces the stoner stigma.

Associating idle web surfing with cannabis use is just another unfair overgeneralization that reinforces the stoner stigma.

What’s not to like about Wikipedia – the most accessible, comprehensive encyclopedia in the world? Of course, like anything else it can be abused.

Plenty of people fall into the trap of mindless internet surfing, and again, cannabis usually has nothing to do with these habits. And as far as digital rabbit holes go, you could do a lot worse than educate yourself on Wikipedia.

Responsible use tip: There’s nothing wrong with exploring the web during your leisure time. But if you know that cannabis will distract you from work that needs to be accomplished, then it’s better to save it for the end of the day or find a strain better suited for productivity.

How Does Pot Really Affect
Our Focus?

I know plenty of people who report that moderate cannabis consumption has always enhanced their ability to focus.

I know plenty of people who report that moderate cannabis consumption has always enhanced their ability to focus.

Reduced focus is a very real risk of irresponsible cannabis use. Ingesting too much cannabis or using the wrong strains at the wrong time can definitely leave you kind of foggy.

Does it have to be this way? No. If used responsibly and sensibly, cannabis actually increases focus for a lot of adults. It really depends on the person, the time of day, and the strain.

Responsible use tip: If you want to stay on top of your cannabis use, you have to recognize when it adds value to your life and when it doesn’t. For some people, a bit of THC can help them study or work on a project. Other people find value in using it after work when they can relax and enjoy themselves.

Responsible Use Can’t Happen Without Responsible Content

The marijuana-related problems we see in these videos are very real, but it’s nothing to laugh at. Content like this sends a damaging message about cannabis and does nothing to bolster the paradigm shift that so many of us are working toward.

When millions of people watch these videos and laugh at the stoner jokes, they’re actually laughing at a plant that has saved lives. With content like this, we’re just fueling the destructive fire of prohibition.

What do you think about BuzzFeed’s pot videos? Innocent humor or the perpetuation of a damaging stereotype that thwarts efforts toward marijuana legalization?
