Florida Supermarket Chain Heiress Donates Huge Sum to Fight Medical Cannabis
A supermarket chain in Florida, Publix, has been touted as being the number one brand in Florida. According to the company's website, there are well over 1,000 Publix stores located all over the Southeastern part of the United States.
An heiress of the Publix company recently donated $800,000 to the anti-medical cannabis campaign in Florida, which has led to recent calls for boycotts against Publix stores.
Donations by the Carol Jenkins Barnett Family Trust are not new
The Carol Jenkins Barnett Family Trust recently donated the large sum to an organization called the 'Florida Drug Free Committee.' The organization is comprised of various cannabis opponents, and also led the opposition to the 2014 medical cannabis initiative in Florida.
Carol Jenkins Barnett is the largest shareholder in Publix, and is the daughter of the company's founder. Her recent donation is troubling to say the least, but it is not new. Carol Jenkins Barnett also donated to the Florida Drug Free Committee in 2014.
However, her donation this year was considerably larger than her 2014 contributions, which totaled $540,000. The Florida Drug Free Committee has received over 8 million dollars in contributions since 2014, according to available records.
Carol Jenkins Barnett is not alone
Florida is a big domino in the battle to end cannabis prohibition, and cannabis opponents know it, which is why there is so much money flowing into Florida to oppose cannabis reform.
Wealthy cannabis opponent Sheldon Adelson donated over 5 million dollars to the Florida Drug Free Committee in 2014. This year his friend Mel Sembler has donated over 1 million dollars to the organization.
A lot of this money is being used to spread reefer madness on an epic level in Florida, in an attempt to scare voters into maintaining the status quo.
Polling is encouraging, but more work is needed
A recent poll was conducted by the Florida medical cannabis campaign, which found 77% support for medical cannabis. But before people get too excited about those poll results, realize that there is still A LOT of time left before Election Day.
Sheldon Adleson has yet to make a donation to the opposition effort so far this year, and I have to assume he is going to exert his financial dominance before the election is over.
The amount will involve a lot of zeroes, and every one of those dollars is going to be used to confuse and scare voters, just as his money was used for the same purpose in 2014.
If you are not already active in assisting the campaign to legalize medical cannabis in Florida, it is not too late to get started. The campaign can always use help in various capacities. You can contact the campaign at this link here.
